It's time to get your Namibian safari underway. There are just a few formalities before you get started, and we'll have you out on the road and exploring in no time. The wildlife and landscapes that lie just over the horizon mean you have so much to look forward to and it all starts here.

Windhoek is one of southern Africa's more relaxed capital cities, with wide boulevards and lots of German-era colonial architecture. The city also has excellent choices when it comes to eating and shopping, and it's home to Namibia's best museums as well.

You get to enjoy some of the prettiest desert views anywhere in southern Africa when you visit Sossusvlei. There are so many near-perfect dunes, with sharp ridgelines and warm hues of gold and red close to sunrise and sunset. The further you go into the valley, the more beautiful it becomes, with so many dunes to climb and lone acacias silhouetted against impossibly tall dunes.

Swakopmund is the kind of place that you can't help but fall in love with. It's a hugely attractive town, filled as it is by German colonial architecture, with everything from Lutheran churches and half-timbered houses to an imposing stone fortress. But Swakopmund's architecture is just the start. Sand dunes surround the town, and the city is one of the adventure capitals of southern Africa, with so many activities on offer.

Damaraland is sure to be one of your favorite areas in Namibia. There's so much for you to enjoy, from the stirring scenery of barren mountains and fertile river valleys to wildlife that could include desert lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and more. Damaraland is also home to several beautiful examples of ancient rock art.

If you're really lucky, you might see four of the Big Five (lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos) while you're exploring Etosha National Park. Elephants coated in white dust, and rhinos by the waterholes after dark are particular highlights. But what gives Etosha its gravitas is the landscape of unending salt pans that make for stunning sunrises and sunsets.

A private sanctuary with good accommodation run by the AfriCat Foundation, Okonjima Nature Reserve is home to small but healthy populations of leopards, as well as pangolins, brown hyenas, warthogs, oryx and various antelope species. Visiting here is a good chance to learn about AfriCat's conservation of these keystone species, and there are some cheetahs in enclosures.
